After listening to Peter Daut from Fox 4 news talk about Baptiste Power Yoga at Stacy’s Baptiste Affiliate Studio in Arlington, I was called to respond. Daut opens his segment with this: “It’s quick, it’s tough and it’s sweaty, very sweaty”.

First, there is nothing “QUICK” about the Baptiste process, in fact, it is actually a life long practice, which I would hope for most of us is not quick. Peter was right in his description that the yoga style is “tough”, but I wonder if he actually practiced, or simply watched others. As Angela has said, “yoga is not a spectator sport”. So if Peter Daut didn’t practice with Stacy was he just “observing”, ’cause for me, “observing” the suffering of the people in Haiti is “tough”. A webster’s dictionary of tough: bad: feeling physical discomfort or pain (`tough’ is occasionally used colloquially for `bad’); “my throat feels bad”; “she felt bad all over”; “he was feeling tough after a restless night”.
Baptiste yoga is challenging; facing your fears, doubts, weaknesses to discover your strengths is challenging. The word tough is not really an accurate description of the process. Peter was correct when he described the practice as “very sweaty”. What he omitted was the why; the combination of heat and humidity to create a door of access to detoxification of the mind, body and spirit. Enough said, these are all arguable.

However, Daut’s point that “Baptiste yoga is less concerned with spirituality and more concerned with physical challenges”, is for me, a complete untruth.
Perhaps a 40-day challenge would shift Daut’s perspective. Releasing old patterns and mental programming, discovering inner strength through exploration using truth and consciousness is a spiritual journey.
