On the Mat with…Katie

Hello YSD Community-

We are so excited to introduce a new teacher trainer spotlight called “On the Mat”. From now until the fall, we will be highlighting our current teacher trainees and let you all learn a little bit more about them.

Our first teacher trainee is Katie Morrison!

When and why did you start practicing yoga?

I went to my first yoga class in college. I went because it was being taught by my former English teacher! I became pretty obsessed through out college, attending at the student rec center and a local studio, when they had coupons. That studio was where I really fell in love with the mentality practiced by yogis of peace and respect for others. Throughout the years, I struggled to keep up my practice. But when I moved to Dallas in March of 2015, I found Yogasport and haven’t stopped flowing since.

Why do you want to become a yoga instructor?

My favorite yoga teacher at that very first studio really inspired me and planted the seed of becoming an instructor. I have gotten distracted with various degrees and career changes, never thinking I would have the time or ability to learn how to teach yoga. But I finally made it happen! I hope to spread the joy and peace that yoga brings me.

What is your yoga philosophy?

This is a good one. I have learned over the years that it’s best to be present, to accept what your body can and can’t do and to never compare yourself to anyone else in the room. Yoga provides me a place to not only become more physically fit, but to also work through things in my mind and to create a more peaceful and calm mood to take with me and face the world.

What do you feel is the most important skill a yoga instructor should possess?

I am learning that flexibility is a very important skill that a yoga instructor should possess. Anything can happen in a yoga class and you have to be able to keep the energy and the class going. I also think it’s important to be able to relate to your fellow yogis and to teach from a place that everyone can understand.

Favorite: Song, Color, Animal, Pose

Anything by Lady Gaga
Color: Blue
Animal: Cats!
Pose: Half Pigeon or Wheel

Finish the sentence: “When I am on the mat, I feel…”

I feel everything! So many things can come up emotionally and physically during my practice and I love that feeling.
